Rule34 Search Syntax

18+ only. This guide discusses adult content and is intended for adult audiences.

Booru-style sites like rule34.xxx don't work like Google. You can't type a sentence — you search with tags, and the real power comes from combining them. This guide covers every search operator you need, with copy-paste examples you can try right away on the adultgpt search tool.

The three modifiers

Every tag in a search carries a modifier that decides how it affects the results:

• Include + — the default. Posts must have this tag. Searching +princess_zelda returns only posts tagged with Princess Zelda.
• Exclude - — posts must NOT have this tag. Adding -animated removes every animated post from your results. Exclusions are the fastest way to clean up a noisy search.
• Optional ~ — posts need at least ONE of the optional tags. This is an "OR" search: ~princess_peach;~princess_daisy returns posts containing Peach or Daisy (or both). Optional tags only take effect once you have two or more.

Combining tags (AND logic)

Multiple included tags act as AND — every tag must appear on the post. The more tags you stack, the fewer results you get, but the closer they match what you actually want:

• +samus_aran;+animated — animated posts of Samus Aran only. Try it
• +harry_potter;-animated — Harry Potter posts, still images only. Try it
• ~princess_peach;~princess_zelda;~princess_rosalina — any of the three princesses. Try it

Sorting and score filters

Two more parameters complete your toolkit. Sort controls the order of results — sort=score:desc puts the highest-rated posts first instead of the newest. Filter sets a minimum score or rating — filter=score>=20 hides everything with fewer than 20 likes.

• +princess_zelda sorted by score with a 50-point minimum — the community's best Zelda posts, no filler. Try it

Where to find tags

There is no sentence search — you need to know which tags exist. The full tag list on rule34.xxx is searchable and sorted by post count, and the autocomplete in the adultgpt search bar shows you the most popular matching tags with their post counts as you type. When a tag returns zero results, it usually doesn't exist or is spelled differently — check the autocomplete suggestions first.

Quick reference

• tag or +tag — include (posts must have it)
• -tag — exclude (posts must not have it)
• ~tag — optional (at least one of the optional tags)
• sort=score:desc — highest score first (also: id, updated)
• filter=score>=20 — minimum score (also: rating:explicit)
